Chilli peppers are the fruits of the plant ‘Capsicum’ and get their fiery heat from a natural chemical called Capsaicin.
When eaten, Capsaicin activates pain receptors in your mouth and sends a message to your brain which responds to the burning sensation by increasing perspiration and releasing endorphins. The endorphins not only provide relief and pleasure but also lowers blood pressure and boosts mood!
They have been consumed by humans since 7500 BC and many cultures around the world have assimilated them into their native cuisines, including of course Indonesia.
Chilli peppers are great for your health as they are packed with nutrients. By weight, chillies have a higher concentration of vitamin A than carrots, twice the amount of vitamin C than citrus fruits and good sources of beta carotene, thiamine, niacin, riboflainoids and other nutrients that many say aid in the prevention of cancer and other diseases. Chilli peppers also aid in digestion, blood circulation and prevention of ulcers.
